Girl Unbroken: A Sister's Harrowing Story of Survival from the Streets of Long Island to the Farms of Idaho

In the highly anticipated sequel to her New York Times best seller, Etched in Sand, Regina Calcaterra pairs with her youngest sister, Rosie, to tell Rosie's harrowing yet ultimately triumphant story of childhood abuse and survival.

They are five kids with five different fathers and an alcoholic mother who leaves them to fend for themselves for weeks at a time. Yet through it all, they have each other. Rosie, the youngest, is fawned over and shielded by her older sister, Regina. Their mother, Cookie, blows in and out of their lives "like a hurricane, blind and uncaring to everything in her path".

But when Regina emancipates herself as a minor and escapes, her siblings are separated. And as Rosie discovers after Cookie kidnaps her from foster care, the one thing worse than being abandoned by her mother is living in Cookie's presence. Beaten physically, abused emotionally, and forced to labor at the farm where Cookie settles in Idaho, Rosie refuses to give in. Like her sister, Regina, Rosie has an unfathomable strength in the face of unimaginable hardship - enough to propel her out of Idaho and out of a nightmare.

Filled with maturity and grace, Rosie's memoir continues the compelling story begun in Etched in Sand - a shocking yet profoundly moving testament to sisterhood and indomitable courage.

Amazon Best Sellers Rank:

After reading Regina Calcaterra's outstanding best seller, "Etched in Sand," I immediately pre-ordered "Girl Unbroken," co-authored by Regina and her little sister, Rosie. The weeks before it arrived were almost unbearable. We had grown to love little Rosie who alsosuffered unbelievable abuse by their mother and we couldn't wait to read Rosie's story or even if she lived through it. This whole familyhas endeared themselves to their readers with their indomitable spirit, their perseverance, their fighting for each other, their true grit, notonly at the cruel hands of their mother but from state-operated child-protective systems that miserably failed them. They not onlysurvived but thrived as they grew older, still holding each other close and forming a protective, loving shield around them from an often cruel and uncaring world. As other reviewers have suggested, if you possibly can, read "Etched in Sand" first but if not, read them in any orderbut please read them. I adore these women and wish them every good thing that comes their way. I pray for them that their stories will continue to bless those who are now being abused, and encourage these children to establish their faith in a loving God, even though some of His children have so badly treated them.

I heard Rosie and Regina speak last night in Huntington, NY. The audience also got to meet Norm, Cherie, and Camille. The fact that five adults could survive such abuse and neglect and still turn out to be amazing people is a heartening message in today's world. Rosie's love for her siblings (especially Gi) shines though every page. I applaud these two women for having the courage to make their story known, as I'm sure that it was not an easy decision. As an educator, I am mindful of the impact that a kind word, gesture or smile can have to a child in need. These children survived Cookie's abuse because of the "good touches" of people who were not in their biological family. Rosie's sense of deep appreciation (seeing a normal family interact and sharing their meal) reminds us that we must never miss a chance to enrich the world of a child. Thank God Rosie and Regina had enough of these people in their lives. And our world is truly blessed to have these brave women come forth to tell a story that will have a major ripple effect in our country.

This is a book that needs to be read. More importantly, it needed to be written. There needs to be a special place in Heaven for those who have endured the physical and emotional torture described here. There also needs to be a special place in Hell for the abusers. Unfortunately, we accept the concept of Heaven and Hell as a matter of faith and hope, and we are too "civilized" to give the abusers what they so richly deserve for the pain they have inflicted on children. Fortunately, Cookie is dead and will inflict no more harm. I do wish that Clyde would have been named. So much for my rant.Rosie is s superhero! So are her sisters and brother. Their children will know love, affection, and most importantly, the stability to have lives filled with room to grow. The cycle of abuse has ended for the five wonderful siblings.I will certainly read the first book in this series and I urge everyone to read them. The writing is wonderful, and the pages fly by, so ingrossed is the reader. I read the book twice in three days. This is in my top ten!

Not sure where to begin so I will thank the authors for telling their stories. I literally ordered this book the moment I finished Etched in Sand. I enjoyed reading the book in first person from Rosie’s point of view. This gave the book a more genuine feel and helped separate the reader from tho other book. Some of this book was really hard to read because of the emotional toll that it had on the author. I found myself having to take a break from reading it. The book is moving and made me call my siblings to tell them thanks for the the relationships the we have developed. The book puts the big things in perspective and makes you laugh at the little things. The book will make you a more well rounded, empathetic person and if it doesn’t strike you in your emotional core than no book will. I would love to read a book by the brother Norm. Hey norm you reading this WRITE a book people would love to read it or sell your art for people would buy it. I would like to get the male perspective.

I highly recommend this book and advise the reader to first check out Regina Cacaterra's story in "Etched in Sand". Then you should download this for Kindle for only $1.99 to read about little Rosie's experiences once Regina and her older half sister leave home. Both books are outstanding and do detail the stories of horrendous abuse to five children at the hands of many different people. I was hesitant to read either at first due to not enjoying digesting stories of child abuse but these to books are plain spoken and necessary. RECOMMENDED.

After reading etched in sand i just needed to know what happened. To Rosie and Norm. Unfortunately. For Rosie she had a miserable mother. Along with the mothers trash for boyfriend'. I raised. Four. Children on Long Island and couldn't. Believe this horror. Story. My kids even went to the same high school . it is sad that. the foster care system is so deplorable. And not trustworthy . kids need to be protected.and the system failed them
